NARRATIVE SPACE

After the Choreography of Space project, I had to decide which focus I wanted to delve into. Because I wanted to develop a different style and discover what the direction still had to offer, I opted for temporary installations.

The assignment I received is broader in scope and offers much more room to discover and experiment because it is not limited in scope. The idea of the assignment was to choose an architect and design a temporary installation with his vision in mind, incorporated in your own way. It is rather a personal interpretation of the architect's vision.

I chose the architect Akihisa Hirata, a student of Toyo Ito who is moving forward in his own way. The work of this Asian architect clearly shows the Japanese way of life. I chose this architect for two reasons. Firstly, I would like to empathize with all cultures and secondly, I am driven by his way of designing. He does not work with the idea of designing spaces with four walls, but in his designs the spaces and depths flow into each other. You can literally read that from the facades. Everything flows into each other, so to speak. That is also his main idea: To tangle.

Another major factor in his designs is nature. Nature has patterns that humans can't imagine, he says. In this way he tries to create a symbiosis between nature and architecture. According to him, everything grows and this can be clearly seen in his works.

I want to process this in my own way in a growing pavilion that will be taken over by nature over time. Bamboo lashings that form the basis of a circular path. The choice of materials, shapes… are all related to the projects of Akihisa Hirata. Each mini pavilion pays tribute to a project that played a major role in Hirata's career.
